Millarworld, a comic book company based in Scotland and founded by Mark Millar almost 15 years ago, known for including in its portfolio characters and stories like Kick-Ass, Kingsman or Old Man Logan, was acquired by Netflix.
According to the BBC, this is the third time such a deal is closed, on this scale, after Warner Bros’ acquisition of DC Comics in 1968 and Marvel being bought by Disney, in 2009.
Mark Millar, who runs the company alongside his wife, Lucy, started Millarworld in 2002, as a creator-owned comic-book company, is delighted by the deal!
The future looks bright!
“I’m so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future and Millarworld couldn’t have a better home.”
This moment is actually a milestone for the platform, being the first ever company acquisition in Netflix’s history. Unfortunately, the terms weren’t disclosed.
The company is currently trying to intensify its efforts to work directly with passionate creators, besides acquiring intellectual property and ownership of stories, which could eventually turn into original productions.
Mark Millar was highly praised by Ted Sarandos, Netflix chief content officer, calling him “as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee. And we guess that the legendary comic book creator doesn’t need any presentation…
The comics universe of tomorrow?
“Mark has created a next-generation comics universe, full of indelible characters living in situations people around the world can identify easily with,” he said.
Millarworld’s portfolio will be brought to a screen near you through films, series, as well as kids’ shows. Also, the brand will continue creating and publishing new stories and character franchises, under Netflix’s label.
